I now just want to comment on some of them: I especially like the reason you mentioned for the assassination scene: Gandhi, struggeling for non-violence resistance, becomes a victim of violence. And I would also say that the scene must be very important as it's shwon twice and builds a frame of the movie. As you've maybe already seen, I've also chosen the train scene for the same reasons. The term "Initiation" fits very well. I also agree with you in the choice of the hunger strike.
