Homework for Monday 31st MARCH

1. Quote III.

That quote was probably given by an English politician or monarch in the 18th or 19th century. It underlines the importance of the British colony India and suggests that the British supremacy (vormachtstellung) in the world is traced back to the fact that the country rules India because it offers a great market and the mass of people in India can be an advantage too (they can be implanted as workers or soldiers). If the British lost that colony, they would, according to the speaker, lose their most important force and therefore become a third rate power.

2.

For the British, the colony India guaranteed their supremacy in the world but they still took their predominance for granted. The Indian people considered the British to be strangers who didn’t want to adjust to India and therefore had to create a ‘new’ Britain.

HEAT

1.

- Olivia: English wife of Douglas, just moved to India some weeks ago

- Douglas: husband, probably English, has been living in India for a long time

They are rich, live in a mansion, have servants. Douglas could be working for the British government.

2.

They are sitting in the shade on their balcony, just finished breakfast.

3.

Olivia is complaining about her life (uneventful), she is not feeling home in India yet, is not used to the environment. Douglas wants her to get involved in social life.

4.

Oliva’s uncomfortable feeling is considered to be a result of the heat and her not being used to it.

5.

I think heat can have that effect on people and their emotions, because the body gets inactive and it feels as if the slightest movement can cause a great strenousness.

Yes, I did experience this phenomen once before and I could feel that the physical discomfort was transmitted to the  nerves. I got annoyed by random situations and felt very troubled and angry.
